I love Creative Commons. I love pictures. And I love Africa! So I was very pleased to encounter - and promptly join - the Images of Africa - Images FOR Africa group on Flickr. The group gathers images of Africa by people who want to share them with others. The photos shared by the group can be used freely under a generous Creative Commons license, and of course can be browsed, discussed or searched in the usual nifty Flickr ways.
There is even a beautiful Flickr map so you can place your own photos on the map and allow people to browse them by country.
I am enthusiastic about the new channels this provides for building networks of shared interest among likeminded and generous people in Africa.
I would gather that Flickr groups like this with such a clear common benefit for group members will provide a wonderfully gentle route into Creative Commons for people that otherwise are skeptical of the hype surrounding Web 2.0.
I arrived at the group through a typically circuitous route - while searching for a meaningful set of photos about Africa to use as an example in a paper I am working on. I saw a link while browsing an intriguing photo set about a visit to Burundi: The Unhappiest Place on Earth. I promptly joined and added a few of my own photos to the group - the ones I uploaded many months ago to crop for use as headers for my WordPress blog. When I have some time I will add more of my pictures and add them to this nifty group.
About Images FOR Africa (Read the Rules!)
Images of Africa - Images FOR Africa!
We want to collect ‘Images of Africa’ that are ‘free to use’ according to a Creative Commons License: Social documentary, structures, public transport, village life, poverty, nature, wildlife … everything!
There is no special purpose other than spreading/providing Africa related, CC licensed photos in media:
so they can be used free of charge by e.g.:
- Africa related NGOs/NPOS to do proper media-work,
- local business initiatives for their web presence,
- upcoming journalists,
- …Every one using group pool images has to check the license of each image to check what exactly can be done with the image
Some ‘professional’ photographers are AFRAID of CC. This group is not about collecting high-quality-pro-photos. so pro’s: pleas don’t get upset if get invited to share. It’s all about sharing! It would be cool to have some pro-photos. Let’s discuss it.
“Creative Commons helps you publish your work online while letting others know exactly what they can and can’t do with your work.” (creativecommons.org)
HowTo?
- Join the Images FOR Africa group

I also like Africa and Morocco especially. Morocco brims over with contrast, colour and mystery and all you can do is simply catch your breath in wonder. It has a timeless quality that no longer exists in the modern world.
Morocco has become one of the major holiday destinations in the Mediterranean, an exotic location with extraordinary natural and cultural wealth. A rapidly growing holiday market, focused on quality.
And Saidia is the best place in Morocco. It has more than 20km of clean sandy beaches, three golf courses and has long been one of the favourite holiday destinations of Moroccans on the Mediterranean coastline.
